Program and Career Description
A degree in English from JSCC prepares the graduate to enter occupations which require strong communication skills and provides a superb background for those pursuing a liberal arts degree at a four year institution. Students completing a bachelor’s degree in English have a variety of career opportunities available including careers in secondary education and in the legal profession. Students completing a master’s degree or higher may teach English courses in colleges or universities. Examples of English careers are found in the chart below.

Transfer Options
At Jackson State, we work hard to make sure that you graduate with your associate’s degree and arrive at a university prepared to start junior-level courses. That’s why we have special articulation agreements with Tennessee Board of Regents (TBR) schools that allow students completing the Associate of Arts/Science English degree to transfer as juniors. TBR universities with English degrees include:
- Austin Peay State University
- East Tennessee State University
- Middle Tennessee State University
- Tennessee State University
- Tennessee Tech University
- The University of Memphis
Other schools in West Tennessee with English degrees include the University of Tennessee at Martin, Lambuth University, , Freed Hardeman University, and Union University. Students transferring to these universities may require additional courses prior to becoming a junior.
