Common Mistakes and Helpful Hints
Common Mistakes
Registration cannot be completed if all steps are not completed. Please take notice of common mistakes that delay processing each semester.
- Checks for student tuition are written out to Dual Studies or the high school.
All checks must be written out to Jackson State Community College or JSCC. - Applications and Hepatitis B waiver forms are submitted unsigned.
The Dual staff mails them back to obtain the appropriate signatures. - Applications are submitted with incorrect social security numbers.
The Dual staff will request a copy of the social security card to verify the correct number. - High School transcripts are submitted without a GPA or any ACT/PLAN scores.
The Dual staff MUST have this information in order to determine eligibility. - Teacher Discount forms are submitted without signatures or a teacher license number.
The Business Services Office MUST have this information to complete processing. - Employee Discount forms are submitted instead of a Dependent Discount form.
Parents that work for the state or either a TBR or UT school may submit a Dependent
Discount form each semester to have a discount applied to their student's tuition. The
employee discount form is a totally different form. - Students come to take a confirmation test without a valid photo ID and/or SS number.
Students sign-in to test with their SS# and we will verify who is testing with photo IDs. - The wrong college is selected on the Tennessee (TN) Dual Enrollment Grant.
Students must select Jackson State on the grant, not where the student wants to
attend after high school. - The wrong term is selected on the TN Dual Enrollment Grant.
Multiple terms may be open on the grant application; be sure to select the semester in
which you plan to enroll. - The wrong grant is selected.
The TN Dual Enrollment Grant (TDEG) is not the HOPE scholarship. Both grants are
funded by the lottery; the TDEG is for high school students, and the HOPE scholarship is
not. You may access the grant from the Dual Studies website to assure you are applying for
the correct grant. - Students do not check their account balances.
Students may owe fees that are not covered by the scholarship. If left unpaid, a HOLD will be placed on the student's account that will prevent them from seeing their grades. You may contact the Dual Studies Office to verify your account is paid in full. - Students quit attending/participating in their class.
Non-attendance does not remove the student from the class. Students must notify their high school counselor and contact the Dual Studies Office to officially withdraw from a class. Students that do not officially drop their class and make a grade of C or below will lose the Dual Enrollment grant.
