Writing Center

The Essentials

The Writing Center at Jackson State is the place for you to find help with all of your writing projects here at college. Whether you are working on an assignment for class or a personal project, like a resume or scholarship application, you can find the support you need to make the piece stronger -- and to make you a better writer.

In fact, that's the goal of the Writing Center: to make you a better writer.

By learning your strengths and weaknesses with the help of a tutor, you will be able to focus your energy on improving the areas of your writing that really need your attention.

You'll get better help if you do a few things before you visit the Center.

Hours

The Writing Center is open during the semester for appointment and walk-in sessions.

This summer, starting June 6, 2011, we're open for sessions on the main campus, Humboldt, Lexington, and Savannah.

In Jackson, we're open Mondays-Thursdays, 8:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. Hours for other campuses will be updated when available.

Locations

The main campus Writing Center in Jackson is in the Library Building, on the first floor, facing the Quad. At the Humboldt, Lexington, and Savannah campuses, the Writing Center is located inside the Learning Resource Center.

Making an Appointment

Making an appointment at the JSCC Writing Center is the best way to be sure that you get the help you need with your writing projects.

To make an appointment with a writing tutor in Jackson, just call the Center at 731.425.8848. You could also stop in the Center to make an appointment in person.

At the other campuses, call the Learning Resource Center to set an appointment, or stop in during tutoring hours.

When you are ready to schedule an appointment, tell the receptionist what project you'd like help with and when you'd like to come.

If you need help at the last minute or could not get an appointment, check for our walk-in hours, when appointments are first-come, first-served for students just dropping in.

What We Do

At the JSCC Writing Center, tutors are available to help you become a better writer.
When you visit the Writing Center, you and your tutor will work on your paper together. Your tutor will make recommendations to improve your paper -- and your writing in general -- based on what you and the tutor discuss. You will always be responsible for the final decisions about what changes to make in your paper.

You can get help in a number of ways:

Call 731.425.8848 for an appointment in Jackson, or stop by the Library Building to visit the Center! At other campuses, just visit us in the Learning Resource Center!

What We Don't Do

A writing tutor's job is to help you become a better writer, not to “fix” your papers so that you get a better grade this one time. After all, you're at college to improve yourself, and you want to be a better writer when you leave JSCC, right?

Thus, a tutor will never write a paper for you. A tutor will never re-write a paper for you. A tutor will never fix the errors in your paper for you. A tutor will help you learn how to do all of those things yourself. You must always make decisions about which of the tutors' recommendations you will take, and you will always be responsible for the final paper you turn in to your professor.

Who Can Visit the Center?

Any JSCC student can visit the Writing Center for help with any writing project.

If you are a student, you can get help with writing assignments for any class, not just writing courses, and personal writing like resumes or scholarship applications.

Also, just in case you have the need, children are welcome at the Writing Center in Jackson, but only during their parents' sessions. At the other campuses, check with the Learning Resource Center for policies regarding children.
