Step-by-Step Admission Guide
Step 1: Apply for Admission
For Summer '08, complete an Admission Application and send to the admission office. For Fall '08, apply online.
A $10.00 non-refundable application fee will be added to your tuition when you register for classes if you are a first-time student at JSCC.
Degree seeking - Request official transcripts if you're degree seeking
- 1st time - make sure official high school transcripts and/or GED scores are mailed to us. Students who earn special education diplomas or certificates of attendance are not admissible to JSCC.
- Transfer - Make sure all official undergraduate college transcripts and your official high school transcript or GED scores are mailed to us.
- Transfer with degree or readmitting student - make sure all official undergraduate college transcripts are mailed to us.
Request that official ACT scores are sent to us if you are under 21 and degree seeking.
Certificate seeking
- Request official high school transcript be mailed to us.
- EMT & EMT-Paramedic students must meet degree seeking requirements.
Non Degree Seeking
- The ACT & Compass tests are not required.
- Transcripts are also not required, although you must have earned the GED or graduated from high school.
- You will not be eligible for financial aid while non-degree seeking.
- You won't be eligible for English or math classes or for classes with English or math prerequisites unless you can prove you're eligible for them.
Step two: Apply for Financial Aid/Lottery Scholarship
If you are certificate or degree-seeking, apply for federal financial aid as soon as possible. Obtain financial aid and scholarship information is available at www.jscc.edu/finaid or by calling (731) 425-2605. The JSCC scholarship deadline is February 15.
Step three: Determine if Testing is Required
Degree-Seeking - Less than age 21, first time in college: Because your ACT scores are used to place you in basic or developmental courses, it very important that you have all official ACT scores sent to us as soon as possible so that you can properly register. Scores must be less than three years old.
Degree-seeking - age 21 and over, first time in college: You will be required to take the Compass test which assesses your skills in reading, math and English. This computer-based test is required before you register. Check for test dates and times. Transfer students who have not passed a college-level English or math course are also required to take the Compass test.
Step four: Medical Documentation Requirements
- Hepatitis B: Beginning fall 2008 if you are a first-time student, when you register for classes you will complete the waiver form indicating you understand the medical implications of Hepatitis B ON-LINE before being admitted to JSCC. Not completing this requirement will stop your registration. If you are under age 18, your parents must complete and return a paper copy of the Hepatitis B Information Waiver Form.
- MMR - You must submit proof of receipt of two doses of the MMR vaccine prior to the first day of classes for your first semester as a full-time student at JSCC. You will only be allowed to register as a part-time student if you don't meet this requirement. The MMR vaccine must have been administered on or after your first birthday. You do not have to meet this requirement if one of the following applies to you:
- You were born before January 1, 1957
- You graduated from a Tennessee public or private high school in May 1999 or thereafter
- You attended a Tennessee public or private school in grades K-12 after July 1, 2001
- You provide a signed statement that your religious tenets and practices prohibit the receipt of any type of immunization (parents must sign if you are under age 18)
- You provide a physician's statement certifying you are allergic to the MMR vaccine
- You provide written documentation from a physician indicating you have a diagnosed case of MMR
- You have documentation showing MMR immunity
- You are classified as active duty military personnel and provide proof of your active duty status
- You were previously enrolled as a full-time student at a TBR college or university for at least one full semester after August 1, 2007
- If you who graduated from a Tennessee public and private high school between May 1979 and December 1998, you are required to provide proof of only the second dose of the MMR.
Step five: Acceptance to College

Once you've been accepted, go to the Advising Center in the Student Union Building during posted times to work out a schedule with a master advisor. Advising is also available at the Savannah, Humboldt and Lexington Centers.
Step seven: Confirm Registration and Pay Tuition
Confirm your registration with the Business Office. Confirm your classes by either: 1) paying your fees; or 2) by giving JSCC permission to apply any financial aid resources toward the payment of your fees or that you will pay, or make arrangements to pay, all fees before the last day to pay as published in the catalog and schedule sheets. All fees are subject to change without notice by action of the Tennessee Board of Regents.
Step eight: Buy Books and Supplies
Buy books at the JSCC Bookstore in the Student Union. Books used for off-campus classes will be available at off-campus registrations. Of course, books are also available at the Savannah, Humboldt and Lexington campuses. 731-425-2650.
Step nine: Attend Class
