Frequently Asked Questions
Where do I go on the JSCC website to register for classes?
Click on the “Register for Classes” link, then click on the Summer Registration icon if you want to register for summer, and the Fall Registration icon to register for fall classes. If you want to register for both summer and fall classes, you must do so through their separate links.
I don’t know my User I.D. and Password. How do I get them?
Your User I.D. is your social security number or, if you did not tell us your SSN, it is the number assigned to you by the college. Your Password is your birth date (MMDDYY). You then will be required to change the password to one of your choosing, so be sure to write it down for future reference.
If you changed your password and now can’t remember what it is, contact the Registration Help Desk at 425-9580 or 1-800-355-5722, ext. 580; answer some identification questions; and they will reset it to your birth date. They will NOT give out passwords.
I’ve gotten my I.D. and/or password wrong several times and it has locked me out. What do I do?
You can wait 30 minutes for it to let you try again, or just call the Registration Help Desk to have them reset your PIN.
What if I don’t know what classes I need to take?
Each student is strongly encouraged to talk with their assigned faculty advisor if you are currently enrolled at JSCC. If you are just starting at Jackson State, talk with a master advisor in the Advising Center on the Jackson Campus, or at the Humboldt, Lexington or Savannah centers.
You can see your chosen JSCC degree program and its course requirements in the catalog, available on our home page and in the fall semester self-service. If you plan to transfer to a four-year institution, be sure to talk with staff at that school to confirm what courses they want you to take and what they will accept toward your degree there.
What if I get a “prerequisite error” and it won’t let me register for a class?
A prerequisite error means you have not completed courses required in order to take the class for which you are trying to register. If you need to take any developmental reading, writing or math classes, that may be your problem. Some courses have requirements to previously complete other college-level courses in order to have the skills needed for the next class.
Check the current JSCC catalog section of course descriptions to see if there are prerequisites or co-requisites (meaning you must also take another specific course during the same semester) in order to take the class for which you are trying to register.
What does it mean if I get a “link error” when I’m trying to register?
A “link error” means that a course for which you are trying to register has an associated lab, co-requisite or other related course that you must take at the same time. When doing a class search, make sure you are selecting a lab designated to go with the lecture you chose. If you register for Learning Strategies, you also must register for the Orientation 100 DSP section.
I’m trying to register and it says I’m not eligible to register yet. What do I need to do?
If this will be your first time to attend Jackson State, or if you attended in the past but are not enrolled this semester, be sure you have been cleared by the Admissions office. You should have been notified of your clearance to register via a letter and/or e-mail if you are now eligible.
If you currently are enrolled at Jackson State, priority registration allows you to register early, but the dates when you become eligible are based on the number of college-level credit hours you have earned before this current semester. You should have received information in the mail notifying you about these dates. You also can check either the printed or online Class Schedule for the semester for which you want to register, and check your earned hours on your transcript through self-service.
If you have been academically suspended from Jackson State, you are not able to register for another semester until the term your suspension is finished, or unless you appeal to the Admissions and Standards Committee and your appeal is granted.
It’s telling me I have a hold and cannot register for or drop classes? How do I get rid of that hold?
Yes, a hold will prevent you from adding or dropping classes, and many other processes at Jackson State until the issue is resolved. You need to contact the office which placed the hold in order to get it taken care of. Holds cannot be dealt with outside of normal office hours from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
If a deadline for adding classes, dropping classes, or receiving a refund occurs on a weekend or holiday, holds must be dealt with during business hours before that deadline. It is your responsibility as a student to be aware of your situation with the college, be aware of deadlines, and take care of any issues in a timely manner.
I am clicking on the icon for the semester for which I want to register, but it won’t let me in. What can I do?

Personal firewalls can come with different anti-virus and/or security packages such as Norton’s or if you have Windows Vista a firewall comes with the new operating system. On the toolbar click “Tools” and go to “Internet Options.” Under “Internet Options” in the “General” tab in the mid section of the page is “Temporary Internet Files.” Click the middle button which has “Delete Files” to delete cached internet files. - Change your security level on Internet Explorer.
