Advanced Maintenance Technician Design

This AMT Co-op allows students to enroll at JSCC, take college classes two days a week on the Jackson campus and work at one of the consortium partners the other three days. The AAS degree in Industrial Technology is completed in five straight semesters. While working, the cooperative student will be paid a minimum of $12 per hour for the 24 hours they work each week at the manufacturing partner.  Salary increases will be provided to advancing students, allowing participants to earn $14 per hour by their fifth and final semester.

Estimated Program Cost and Curriculum

The curriculum for the Associate of Applied Science Degree in Industrial Technology with a Multi-Skilled Technician concentration consists of both academic and technical courses leading to the achievement of 66 semester hours.

Jackson State Community College is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. The Associate of Applied Science in Industrial Technology is accredited by the Association of Technology, Management, and Applied Engineering (ATMAE).

Degree

Upon successful completion of the AMT Co-op, the student will receive an Associate of Applied Science degree in Industrial Technology with a concentration in Multi-Skilled Maintenance from Jackson State Community College.

This concentration prepares graduates for technical positions in the expanding field of electronics, instrumentation, and electrical equipment. The primary objective is to provide a broad foundation of theoretical and practical knowledge in the areas of electrical and electronic circuits, electrical machinery, programmable logic controllers and hydraulics/pneumatics equipment. The curriculum is broad-based but focuses on the integration of each area as used in systemic applications.

Co-Op Experience

Over the past several years, it has become evident that U.S. workers are lagging behind in education and, ultimately, technical skills. This means that the skilled workforce is not prepared to compete globally with workforces that have educational backgrounds rich in math, science and engineering. Therefore JSCC and 16 local manufacturing firms have created a partnership (consortium) that has developed the AMT as a means of addressing the local manufacturing needs.

Selected students will be employed by one of the consortium partners:

While employed, students will have the opportunity to work side by side a multi skilled maintenance technician, be given hands-on opportunities to problem-solve, and have real responsibilities for the production of products.

Manufacturers today are highly automated and require highly skilled personnel to program, operate, repair and continually improve processes. These personnel are individuals who are good problem solvers, proficient in math, reading and comprehension skills. They are highly motivated and willing to help their company perform to high quality and safety standards, therefore participants will be expected to:

Once an individual has completed the Industrial Technology degree there is no obligation to continue working for the consortium partner.

Retention

To remain in the AMT Co-op a participant must be in good standing with both JSCC and the consortium partner for which one is assigned.

  1. Maintain a "C" or higher in all classes.
  2. Follow the guidelines presented by the employer to maintain employment.
  3. Attend and particpate in JSCC/AMT events which may include but are not limited to, TEAM meetings, recruitment activities, and promotional Events.

If employment is terminated for ANY reason or the students receives a grade lower than a "C" in any class, the student will not be permitted to remain in the AMT Co-op, but will be referred to a comparable Multi-Skilled Maintenance program.

Students who remain employed and advance academically will receive an increase in wage amount each semester for the five semester program.

The Business and Industry division at JSCC has a retention specialist that is available to work with students and any barriers they may have in completing the program.
