Advanced Maintenance Technician Admissions

AMT StudentsThe Advanced Maintenance Technician Co-op has specific admission requirements because of its limited placement positions.  Students seeking admission to the AMT Co-op must submit separate applications for admission to Jackson State Community College and for admission to the program. Once the student has completed the JSCC application for admission, the AMT co-op application should be completed and submitted. The AMT application is available in two formats - either format will be accepted.

Application Guidelines

If utilizing the paper application, and the application is completed by hand, please use black or blue ink and print clearly. If there are portions of the application that cannot be read the application will be considered incomplete.

The online application is to be fully completed. If a question is not answered, the student will not be able to submit the form. The applicant will be directed what to complete.

Applicants are expected to write an essay, as part of the application. The essay should explain the applicant's interest in working as an Advanced Maintenance Technician and one's ultimate goal in applying for a position in the AMT Co-op at JSCC. When using the online application process, the essay will be cut and paste.

  1. It should be typed double-spaced in a 12 point font.
  2. The essay should be 500 words.

  4. Once the application is complete, attach the essay and a copy of the applicant's high school transcript before submitting it for review. The transcript will need to be a pdf for the online application.
  5. The attached transcript does not need to be complete or official, as the application should be completed before graduation.
  6. An official transcript will be required to be sent to JSCC, once one is available, before an applicant can be "officially" accepted to JSCC.
  7. A copy of the ACT or SAT scores should also be attached to the AMT application (pdf).
  8. Letters of recommendation are encouraged, but not required. They should be turned in on the day of the interview.

A completed paper application along with attachments should be mailed or delivered to JSCC on or before the due date. A completed online application along with attachments should submitted by midnight of the due date.

**Attachments will include the essay, a copy of the current high school transcript, and ACT/SAT Test scores.

**If the student is delivering the application packet, it should be delivered by 4:30 on or before the due date, at the front desk of the McWherter Center for Advanced Technology, located at the corner of Dr. F.E. Wright Blvd. and North Parkway in Jackson, TN.

**If the packet is being mailed it must arrive by or be postmarked not later than the scheduled due date.

Application Requirements

  1. Complete and submit a JSCC Application for Admissions as well as the AMT Application.
  2. Write and submit a 500 word essay explaining your interest in working as an Advanced Maintenance Technician and your ultimate goal in applying for this educational co-op program.
  3. Prepare to be interviewed by panel of consortium members and JSCC faculty/staff.
  4. Ability to meet employment screening requirements that may include a drug screen, a physical exam, and a background check.

Important Dates

  1. Immediately:  Prepare, register and take the ACT. College rediness is preferred, but not required to apply for the AMT Co-op:  Math (19), English (18) and Reading (19). College readiness may be achieved through improved ACT or SAT scores, successful completion of JSCC challenge exams, and/or completion of SAILS, a Bridge Program or completion of co-req labs by the Fall Term.)
  2. Now: Submit completed application for admission to Jackson State Community College.
  3. Now: Complete and submit application(s) for financial aid (FAFSA, TN Promise, Scholarships, and Grants). Yes, applicants will still be eligible to receive any additional funding for which they are qualified to receive.
  4. Prior to Graduation: Complete the AMT application.
    •  Meet with guidance counselor concerning necessary data for the AMT application.
    •  Complete the application.
    •  Write and attach the 500 word essay to the application.
  5. May/June: Interview selections.
  6. June/July: Applicant interviews with consortium members and JSCC faculty/staff.
  7. July: Program participant selections. 
  8. July: Selection notifications.
  9. July: JSCC/AMT program orientation.
  10.  August: Begin on-site work experience. 
  11. August: First day of class.

Co-Operative Opportunity

A. Students meeting the application requirements will be asked to participate in one or more interviews.

  • The interviews may be conducted on the phone, or in person.
  • An individual should expect to be interviewed by a panel consisting of multiple consortium members and JSCC faculty and staff.
  • The purpose of the interview is for consortium members to find the best match for their firm and to ensure the highest possible opportunity for success of the applicant.

B. The final decision for employment placement will be made by the hiring committee.  An applicant's preference WILL NOT be considered when making the final selections.

C. Selected applicants will be expected to be college ready in the areas of Math (19), English (18) and Reading (19) by the beginning of the Fall Term to be permitted to participate in the co-operative experience.  (This may be achieved through improved ACT or SAT scores, successful completion of JSCC challenge exams, and/or completion of SAILS, a Bridge Program or completion of co-req labs by the Fall Term.)  

D. Selected applicants will be admitted as co-op students, may be hired through a temporary service once they have completed and passed the employment screenings which may include, but are not limited to:

    • Drug Screening
    • Physical Exam
    • Background Check
    • These screenings will be of no cost to the selected applicant.

E. Co-op students will be required to attend ALL orientations, safety meetings, and/or TEAM meetings scheduled by the consortium partner (employer) and JSCC.
