Jackson State Community College is committed to serving our veteran students and their families in a timely, thorough and conscientious manner.
The Veterans' Benefits Coordinator assists students eligible to receive VA benefits through the Selected Reserve Educational Assistance Program (Chapter 1606), Chapter 1607 (REAP), GI Bill-Active Duty Educational Assistance Program (Chapter 30), children, spouses, widows or widowers of veterans killed or rated 100% disabled while a member of the Armed Forces under Chapter 35, and the GI Bill Chapter 33. Also available is assistance for Vocational Rehabilitation recipients through the VA, Chapter 31.
The enrollment process to apply for VA benefits is separate from the College admission process, and must be handled through the JSCC Veterans Affairs Office. You are strongly encouraged to meet with the Coordinator BEFORE registering for your first semester at Jackson State.
To be eligible for VA benefits, a student must be degree-seeking or certificate seeking and pursuing an approved major.
Other Financial Assistance for School
In addition to available VA Benefits, you are strongly encouraged to pursue other sources of financial assistance, by filling out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), available on the JSCC Financial Aid website at http://www.jscc.edu/financial-aid.
This site also features a link for you to estimate the total cost of your education at Jackson State, based on financial aid resources. It does NOT include calculation of additional VA benefits you may receive.
Deferred Payment Possibility
Students receiving VA benefits may elect to apply for a deferment of tuition and fees if they have not received their benefit check by the last date to complete payment, and are not continuously enrolled and already receiving benefits.
Eligibility for Deferment of Payment of Tuition and Fees by Certain Eligible Students Receiving U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs or Other Governmentally Funded Educational Assistance Benefits.
Service members, veterans, and dependents of veterans who are eligible beneficiaries of U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs education benefits or other governmentally funded educational assistance, subject to the conditions and guidelines set forth in Tennessee Code Annotated 49-7-104 as amended, may elect, upon formal application, to defer payment of tuition and fees until the final day of the term for which the deferment has been requested.
Application for the deferment must be made no later than 14 days after the beginning of the term, and the amount of the deferment shall not exceed the total monetary benefits to be received for the term. Students who have been granted deferment are expected to make timely payments on their outstanding tuition and fees balance once education benefits are being delivered, and eligibility for such deferment shall terminate if the student fails to abide by any applicable rule or regulation, or to act in good faith in making timely payments. This notice is published pursuant to Public Chapter 279, Acts of 2003, effective July 1, 2003.
