Jackson, Tenn. – University of Tennessee at Martin and Jackson State Community College continued recent partnership efforts with the relocation of the UT-Martin Jackson Center to the JSCC campus. A press conference was held Wednesday at JSCC to announce the cooperative agreement.

Beginning in January 2008, the UT-Martin Jackson Center administrative offices and classrooms, previously located at the Tennessee Technology Center in Jackson, will be housed in the McWherter Center building at JSCC.

“We are proud to again partner with Jackson State Community College,” said UT-Martin Chancellor Tom Rakes. “This joint effort is a specific example of UT uniting with a partner institution to provide access and quality upper division programs in the Jackson area.”

“We are excited that UT Martin is coming to our campus,” added Dr. Bruce Blanding, JSCC president. “This will give students in Jackson and surrounding counties the opportunity to complete a wide range of educational degrees from associate’s to master’s all right here in the same location. This joint use of facilities ensures that we are using our resources wisely while at the same time providing increased opportunities for our students.”

Classes offered at the UT-Martin Jackson Center include master of science in education (counseling), bachelor of science in management, registered nurse to bachelor of science in nursing and ROTC classes. Additional courses/programs may be offered as needed. As part of the agreement, UT-Martin will not offer any credit or non-credit courses on the JSCC campus that substantially duplicate JSCC offerings. However, UT Martin will continue to explore possibilities of expanding upper division course offerings and degree program offerings.

“The UT Martin and JSCC leadership, staff and faculty are to be commended for their continued commitment to educating our citizens and supporting partnerships such as this that will enhance both access to education and economic development throughout West Tennessee and beyond,” said Bill Duffy, Office of Extended Campus and Continuing Education executive director.

Today’s announcement follows an agreement in August 2006, when the two schools partnered to provide courses for an associate degree in agriculture at Jackson State. The arrangement provided a full range of agriculture courses leading to the associate degree which transfers seamlessly to UT Martin for the completion of a bachelor’s degree.
