Jackson, Tenn. – Jackson State Community College Arts and Sciences Division will host a lecture by former Fulbright Scholar and noted environmental historian Professor Ranjan Chakrabarti from Jadavpur University, Kolkata, West Bengal, India. The lecture, “Tropics, Cyclones, and Colonial Meteorology: Historicizing Global Warming,” should draw many people interested in global warming and rising oceans. Kolkata (Calcutta) was identified by Al Gore in his documentary An Inconvenient Truth as one of the world’s cities most in danger from rising oceans. In the US, almost the entire population of Florida could suffer as environmental refugees should the oceans continue to rise from global warming.
The lecture will begin at 12:15pm in the Science Auditorium on February 19, 2008. Attendees will have the opportunity to interact and question Dr. Chakrabarti after 12:45. The lecture is free and open to the public. For more information, contact Dr. Lawrence Gundersen at 731.424.3520 x258 or lgundersen@jscc.edu.
