JSCC Students Place in TMATYC Math Contest
Students from Jackson State Community College recently participated in a statewide math contest for all two-year college in the state of Tennessee hosted by the Tennessee Mathematical Association for Two Year Colleges (TMATYC).
Jackson State took 10 students to the contest and had five students place in the top ten in their respective categories. They are:
• Leston McArthur, second place in developmental math, taught by Jack Hadley
• Jason Martin, third place in developmental math, taught by Jack Hadley
• Lisa Canada, fifth place in developmental math, taught by Linda Pride
• James Skelley, fourth place in pre-calculus, taught by Betty Frost
• Olivia Harville, ninth place in pre-calculus, taught by Betty Frost
There are five different categories in this contest including tests for developmental math, statistics, pre-calculus and two divisions for calculus. The students who enter the contest pick the category that is closest to their particular level in math. TMATYC recognizes the top 10 places from each category with a certificate of achievement and the top three finishers with monetary awards. There were eight schools that participated in this year's TMATYC Math Contest and most schools had between 10 - 30 students in each category.
