Jackson State Appoints Malik Head Baseball Coach

Jan 23rd, 2013

Tyson Malik has been appointed Head Baseball Coach for Jackson State Community Colleges Generals. Malik had served four years as an assistant coach at Jackson State.

I am very honored to have the opportunity to take over such a great program. I am very grateful and fortunate that Steve Cornelison has trusted me enough to hand over a team and tradition that he has been building for many years. I have learned a lot from him in my four years as his assistant and hope I can continue what he has done, said Malik.

'Jackson State Baseball has a great reputation and is a very competitive program in the state of Tennessee and even in the Southeast. I have enjoyed my previous four years at the school. I have talked to many coaches from other college programs and high schools since being at Jackson State, and all of them have had nothing but great things to say about the program,' he continued.

When asked what he was most excited about in his new role, he responded, 'I get a chance to be in charge of a program. I can take what I have learned from coaches I have played for or coached with and apply it. I have an idea of what I want, and now I get the opportunity to see if it will work. I am also very excited to take over a program that has been in such good hands. There are a lot of talented kids on this team, which will give us the ability to hopefully win right away. These kids are a great group who have good character and work hard on the academic side as well. They have made the transition for me much easier than I could have expected.'

Malik worked with the infielders and hitting and is also responsible with recruiting. The previous two years combined at Jackson State, the team has hit for a .318 average with over 100 homeruns and just under 200 doubles.

Malik comes to Jackson State from Jefferson State Community College in Birmingham, Alabama, where as an assistant coach for Jefferson State, he helped them to a 38-19 season and a spot in the NJCAA Region 22 Championship Tournament. As the team's infield and hitting instructor, Malik assisted the team in achieving a batting average of .331, as well as 75 homeruns, 123 doubles, a .526 slugging percentage, and a fielding percentage of .965. Malik most notably tutored Conference Player of the Year, Chris Sosebee, who batted .419 with 19 homeruns, improving his batting average and homerun total by 16 homeruns from the previous year, as well as other All-Conference players.

Prior to Jefferson State, he served as an assistant coach at Pine Ridge High School and St. Cloud High School in Orlando, Florida under the direction of Head Coach Rob Hammond. Coach Malik assisted in leading both high school teams to district title games.

After his prep career, Tyson played at Seminole Community College in Sanford, Florida. While playing for the Raiders, Malik helped his team win the FCCAA State Championship and NJCAA Regional Championship allowing them to advance to the JUCO World Series in Grand Junction, CO where they placed 5th and finished the year with a top 20 national ranking.

After playing for the Raiders, Malik moved on to pursue his bachelor's degree in Sport Management at the University of Florida in 2005. He received his master's degree in Physical Education at the University of Central Florida in 2007.

Tyson is 28 and resides in Milan with his wife Katherine.
