Tyson Malik is starting his first season as the Head Coach at Jackson State Community College. Malik spent the previous four years as an Assistant Coach for Athletic Director, Steve Cornelison. In his four years as an assistant, Malik was the Recruiting Coordinator, instructed all position players, was in charge of hitting, and coached third base. In 2012, Malik helped lead the Generals to a 34-16 record, while also seeing one of his top recruits, RHP Wes Parsons sign with the Atlanta Braves.
Offensively, Malik helped lead the Generals to a .351 batting average, which led the conference and was fifth in the nation in 2012. The Generals also led the league with a .434 OB%, a .552 SLG%, and 392 runs driven in. The Generals also hit 50 homeruns, 120 doubles, and led the league with an OPS of .986. Malik assisted Conference Player of the Year and First Team All-American, KJ Roberts, who hit .427 with 8 homeruns, 16 doubles, and 7 triples. Malik also instructed Kane Barrow, who earned First Team All-Conference honors and was an Honorable Mention All-American as a freshman. Barrow hit .416 with 12 homeruns and 17 doubles, while driving in 68 runs.
Malik comes to Jackson State from Jefferson State Community College in Birmingham, Alabama, where as an assistant coach for Jefferson State, he helped them to a 38-19 season and a spot in the NJCAA Region 22 Championship Tournament. As the team's infield and hitting instructor, Malik assisted the team in achieving a batting average of .331, as well as 75 homeruns, 123 doubles, a .526 slugging percentage, and a fielding percentage of .965. Malik most notably tutored Conference Player of the Year, Chris Sosebee, who batted .419 with 19 homeruns, improving his batting average and homerun total by 16 homeruns from the previous year, as well as other All-Conference players.
Prior to Jefferson State, he served as an assistant coach at Pine Ridge High School and St. Cloud High School in Orlando, Florida under the direction of Head Coach Rob Hammond. Coach Malik assisted in leading both high school teams to district title games.
After his prep career, Tyson played at Seminole Community College in Sanford, FL. While playing for the Raiders, Malik helped his team win the FCCAA State Championship and NJCAA Regional Championship allowing them to advance to the JUCO World Series in Grand Junction, CO where they placed 5th and finished the year with a top 20 national ranking.
After playing for the Raiders, Malik moved on to pursue his Bachelor's degree in Sport Management at the University of Florida in 2005. He received his Master's degree in Physical Education at the University of Central Florida in 2007.
Tyson resides in Milan with his wife Katherine.
