Purpose

Twelve-month fiscal year faculty appointments will teach 38-42 credit hours or teaching load equivalency over a three-term period (fall, spring, and summer) based upon a 37.5-hour work-week, allowing appropriate time for instructional, administrative tasks, and other established faculty duties.

Policy

On average, the teaching load equivalency (TLE) for a 12-month faculty would be 15 hours in fall, 15 hours in spring, and 8-12 hours in summer. Because programs in the Nursing and Health Sciences fields often differ from traditional courses, no single formula fairly or realistically relates time in the class or the number of students to a teaching load.  Health Sciences/Nursing faculty loads must be consistent with load limits established by the appropriate accrediting agency but may differ from traditional liberal arts disciplines.

12-month faculty short of the 38 TLE hours will be assigned other duties to make up for their load. For example, if a faculty member only has 36 hours (i.e., 6 hours in the summer), he or she will work with his/her Dean to assign duties for two hours per week.

Approval for other duties as assigned must be obtained in writing in advance from the Dean and Vice President of Academic Affairs.

12-month appointees will typically not be eligible for overload consideration. Rare exceptions to this require documentation of need and approval from the Vice President of Academic Affairs. The division staffing plan will address load differences based on the discipline.
