Accommodations
Test Accommodations
Alternate test accommodations are available when the usual testing method is likely to reflect a student's disability rather than their level of achievement. Test accommodations are arranged on an individual basis considering the nature of the disability, test format, technical skills of the student and a sense of what is fair and reasonable for the circumstances. Students who most frequently use test accommodations include those with learning, visual, motor, hearing and psychological disabilities.
For special testing circumstances, please contact the Coordinator of Disabled Student Services with at least one week's advance.
Typically, test accommodations include:
- Extended time
- Low stimulus environment
- Large print
- Reader
- Writer
Conducive to educationally sound testing procedures. Test accommodation requests are initiated by the student and coordinated by the Student disability Office with one week's advance notice
Auxiliary Aids
Auxiliary aids include interpreters, readers, note-takers, recorders, or other equipment needed by some students to ensure equal educational opportunity. The Disabled Student Services Office is responsible for arranging appropriate aids when requested by students with advanced notice. The college pays for academic aids deemed necessary for a student's educational access if they are not available from another source; however, it does not pay for personal aids such as attendant care or individually prescribed devices of a personal nature.
Academic Adjustments
The Disabled Student Services Office is responsible for assisting disabled students with academic modifications and adjustments to ensure that requirements do not discriminate on the basis of a disability. Academic requirements that are essential to the program of instruction or directly related to licensing will not be considered as discriminatory.
Modifications may include:
- Extra time permitted for completion of course work
- Substitutions/waivers for specific non-essential courses
- Adaptation in how specific courses are conducted
- Usage of auxiliary aids or adaptive equipment
