SGA Meeting Jan. 30, 2008
Minutes for first SGA meeting of spring 08
Call to order
The meeting was called to order by SGA President Kevin Newhouse at 2:00pm on Wednesday, Jan. 30th 2008. Those present were as follows: Lisa Kincaid, Secretary to V.P. of student services, SGA President; Kevin Newhouse, SGA V.P.; Beth Grissom, Sophomore Commissioner; Joey Velie, Freshman Commissioner; Christina Brown, Innovations Ensemble Rep.; Mark Jones, Spanish Club & History/Philosophy Club SGA Rep.; Bill Mathews, and Nicole McCoy. Our guests were Mrs. Annette Deaton and Laurence Tumpag. Those not present were Athletics Director, Activities Director, and Baseball Coach; Steve Cornelison, Sophomore Commissioners; Jennifer Brown and Sara Futch, and SGA Secretary Billie Jo Callis. If I missed anyone please accept my sincere apology.
Reading of the minutes
SGA V.P. Beth Grissom, acting on behalf of our lack of an SGA Secretary, read the minutes of the last meeting, Nov. 19, 2007.
Mrs. Deaton-Alcohol Awareness
Because of her need to leave early Mrs. Annette Deaton gave her presentation early. She announced the upcoming alcohol awareness day and that the Counseling Office was now taking care of this event. She asked for volunteers to help with it and stated that she would like to see the event student driven. Kevin mentioned that his Uncle died from alcoholism and that he was interested in helping out. Mrs. Deaton said that the event would be held in the Student Union Building, if there were no suggestions otherwise. She asked that we help to get the word out and that we have fun with it.
Steve Cornelison-Review of office hours and office decorum
Steve was not present for his presentation. Lisa went to call him and returned saying that he was at ball practice and would not be attending this meeting
Old Business
Nicole brought it to our attention that we never did anything about the JSCC Food Pantry. Apparently we were asked to help find needy people to distribute food to and we failed to do so. She suggested that from now on we put a specific person in charge of things that we decide to do. Because no families were found to give this food to, most of it spoiled.
New Business
SGA Secretary Vacancy
The lack of officers for the Spring 08 semester was addressed and Joey made a motion that Bill Mathews be voted in as SGA Secretary in place of Billie Jo because she will not be returning this semester. The motion was seconded by Nicole and the vote was unanimous in favor so Bill is now SGA Secretary until Fall 08 elections are held.
SGA Sophomore Commissioner Vacancy
We set a Feb. 6th deadline for motions for Sophomore Commissioner that was vacated when Sara didn't return to school for Spring 08. All were in agreement.
SGA President's Meeting: 2/1/2008
Kevin announced that he would be attending the SGA President's Meeting in Nashville on Friday, Feb. 1st from 10am through 1pm. He asked for our prayers for this trip to be safe.
Black History Month Events
We talked about the one event that was already scheduled. This event is a Black History Trivia that will be held in the Student Union Building Feb. 5th at twelve noon. This event should last for approximately seventy-five minutes and one could win up to $400.00. This will be hosted by Entertainment Corporation.
Bill made a suggestion of maybe having a Black woman come speak sometime during the month. Joey and Nicole also spoke of someone. We decided to put a plan in motion to get names of available speakers and get back with Kevin with them.
Kevin said that he would get posters to post in the SGA office and Nicole asked who would take charge of BHM event planning.
It was stated that Innovations might perform.
All Clubs Meeting
All Clubs Meeting will be held in classroom building, room 220 Wednesday, Feb. 13th at 3pm. Club registration forms are due at this meeting.
Spring Activities
Lisa talked about the activities flyer. She expressed the need for help in both planning and holding these events. She said that she would need six or seven students to help with the easter egg hunt on March 15th and asked if we shouldn't set age limits and maybe even break them up in age groups. We thought that somewhere between eight and ten years old was probably as old as we should have.
Lisa asked what we thought about a field day sometime in April and all were interested. She also mentioned the Awards Ceremony being held somewhere around April 9th and we talked about the possibility of Innovations performing for the event.
Nicole said that a Student versus Faculty softball game would be fun. We discussed having boat races. Lisa asked if SGA wanted to go forward with these plans and if so we needed to begin advertising it now. Nicole again asked who wanted to head it up. I don't recall any volunteers.
Lisa said that we needed ushers for the Graduation Ceremony.
We discussed having our end of semester pizza the week before finals instead of the week of.
Mr. Finney sent word that they were going to discuss whether or not to hire a nurse on Monday Feb. 4th at 2:30 in the Presidents Conference Room. He would like to have input on this from the SGA.
Fundraised for the Dream Center
Laurence Tumpag made a heart breaking presentation for the Dream Center Emergency Shelter in Jackson. He told us of their need for food and basic toiletries. He informed us of what the center did for the community and how they were not funded by the government. He told us how people were going without enough food. He also told us that due to their fire alarm going off too many times when it shouldn't that the fire marshal warned if it happened again they would have to close down. In fear of this, he said that the center had shut down its kitchen and was serving cold food. He told us of their plan to open an outside kitchen if possible. Laurence said that he had first hand experience with these problems because he is a resident there. He went into why he was there but I decided not to make his reasons public.
Bill told the SGA of the efforts by PTK in sponsoring a food drive and the SGA decided to come on board in this effort.
Mark suggested that we send the excess food that JSCC's food bank may have to the center.
Announcements
Feb. 26th Innovations will be performing at the Dixie in Huntingdon.
Nicole mentioned implementing the suggestions on the SGA idea board; having a JSCC day care, humane society, yard sale etc. We decided to talk more about these suggestions later.
Adjournment
Kevin adjourned the meeting at 2:59.
