West Tennessee Healthcare - Specimen Processing Clerk - JMCGH Core Lab (Full-time Evenings 1:30 pm - 10:00 pm)

Duties

Job Summary/Scope of Responsibility:

Responsible for the receipt, centrifugation, pretesting preparation and suitability of blood and body fluid specimens submitted to the laboratory for testing purposes. Responsible for incoming and outgoing telephone communications, routine and special laboratory clerical work. Consistent exposure to body fluid samples that may be of infectious nature. High School Diploma or equivalent required. Keyboard experience preferred, general office skills and telephone etiquette. Under the direct supervision of Supervisor of Clinical Laboratory Office for the assigned shift as scheduled. Employee is subject to call back and overtime as required by the hospital.

Essential Job Functions: 

  • Receives laboratory specimens from phlebotomists, pneumatic tube system and other avenue for delivery. Records time collected and received in the Laboratory Information System
  • Prepares samples for testing according to specimen type. Centrifuges specimens as appropriate. Ensures bar code labels are appropriate for instruments
  • Distributes lab specimens to specific work areas
  • Ensures test orders match labels for processing by ENGEN system
  • Performs routine and/or special clerical duties in designated areas
  • Orders tests from manual requisitions
  • Registers Outreach patients and orders tests as needed
  • Receives outpatients and new patient admissions and processes laboratory orders
  • Pick-up specimens from surgery and blood bank as needed
  • Collection of industrial drug screens
  • Relays messages to Phlebotomy team for collection of specimens as necessary
  • In absence of phlebotomy dispatcher - routes phlebotomists to appropriate collections
  • Works to coordinate communication between floors, phlebotomists and testing areas
  • Answering telephone questions and assists callers as necessary
  • Contributes to a positive work climate and the overall team effort of the department
  • Performs related responsibilities as required or directed 

Qualifications

Job Specifications:

Education:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: 

  • Ability to read, write and perform oral and written procedures along with mathematical and technical scientific skills
  • Ability to communicate effectively with others directly by phone
  • Ability to operate computer keyboard and standard office equipment
  • Must be able to handle large volumes of specimens without confusion, maintaining correct identification and specimen type
  • Ability to learn basic scientific information as needed to evaluate sample integrity and suitability

Interpersonal Requirements:

  • Explains lab policies and procedures and aspects of ordering and specimen processing to medical staff and nursing on a frequent basis
  • Refers hospital personnel and visitors to appropriate departments and/or resources in the lab and entire hospital
  • Obtains and exchanges pertinent data with laboratory employees, the medical staff, hospital employees, and nursing on a continuous  basis regarding test results or patient data
  • Contributes to a positive work environment and the overall team effort of the department

Physical Demands:

  • Should be mobile and able to move about in department and throughout the hospital to pick-up and deliver samples
  • Ability to move supplies weighing 10-25 pounds
  • Ability to maintain a fixed position for 1-2 hours

Environmental Conditions:

  • Continuous exposure to noise of pneumatic tube system, intercommunication system, telephones and centrifuges
  • Continuous exposure to body fluid samples that may be of infectious nature
  • Intermittent exposure to chemical odors

Other Job Requirements:

  • Knowledge of hospital, and departmental policies and procedures as normally acquired through 3 months of on the job training and employee orientation
