West Tennessee Healthcare - Milan General Hospital - Phlebotomist II (Part-time - Milan, TN)

Duties

Overview

Responsible for obtaining venous, arterial, and capillary blood samples from patients and transporting the samples to the laboratory. Ability to perform venipuncture and other blood collection procedures. Availability, willingness and experience in performing special procedures such as: assisting physicians in special procedures, special nursery procedures, or preparation of reference lab samples. Possible exposure to contagious disease. Continuous exposure to blood, patient specimens, and needles. High school diploma or equivalent required. Certification as a phlebotomist by a national certification board required for LLT Program phlebotomists. In other Laboratory departments, EMT IV certified phlebotomists may be acceptable. Under the direct supervision of the Phlebotomy Shift Supervisor or Manager responsible for the assigned shift as scheduled

Essential Job Functions: 

  • Obtains and /or verifies receipt of al venous, arterial or capillary blood specimens as requested; divides blood quantities for multiple tests; and transports the specimens back to the lab
  • Responds to patient's emergencies in order to be available to collect specimen as requested
  • Administers dextrose as required for tolerance test
  • Applies accurate identification and collection of specimens with respect to patient identity, appropriateness of specimen obtained with respect to analyses ordered, and correct deliveries for effective handling
  • Stocks supplies for assigned area and recommends ordering
  • Transportation of blood specimens collected by non-lab personnel
  • Answers the telephone and routes the calls to the proper department or individual
  • Attends to the pneumatic tube system and lab "In-Box" for receiving specimens whether collected by phlebotomists or nurses
  • Orders lab tests from manual request forms
  • Relays results by the pneumatic tube system, fax machine, or mail to the proper recipients
  • Assists with new employee training, assessment of competency of Phlebotomist, and assists with in-service education
  • Properly obtain urine specimens for forensic drug testing when required
  • Performs related responsibilities as required or directed  

Qualifications

Education: 

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required

Licensure, Registration, Certification:

  • Certification as a phlebotomist by a national certification board required for LLT Program Phlebotomist. In other Laboratory departments, EMT IV certified phlebotomist may be acceptable

Experience:

  • Six (6) months phlebotomy in a clinical laboratory or 100 successful sticks
