Duties

Job Summary/Scope of Responsibility:

Under the direction of the Program Supervisor, assists with strengthening the parent-child relationship through improving parenting skills and meeting the dependency needs of the parents. Responsible for optimizing the home environment for the physical and mental well-being of children who are at risk of being abused or neglected and their families. Employee is subject to call back and overtime as required by the hospital.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Establishes a trusting relationship with high-risk families by initiating and maintaining regular and client contact
  • Establishes a family case plan with goals, objectives, and activities with the client and supervisor. Uses observation skills to assess the family dynamics and dysfunction and implements appropriate interventions
  • Consistently follows Healthy Start policies and procedures
  • Has working knowledge of parent-child interactions, child development issues, and the dynamics of child abuse and neglect. Consistently applies this information in working  with the families.
  • Demonstrates the proficiency in basic counseling skills
  • Assists parents in making and attending appointments for physicians, social service agencies, and the like. Acts as a liaison between community resources and families
  • Has familiarity with community resources and uses them appropriately to meet the needs of high-risk families
  • Is available to clients on a 24-hour basis
  • Meets with supervisor on a regular basis to evaluate client status
  • Records pertinent information to related client observation and activities and worker intervention in the client file
  • Attends regular staff meetings, case conferences, in-service training, and other meetings as required or directed
  • Serves as a liaison for the program to the community. Collaborates with other organizations and agencies to provide comprehensive array of services to families
  • Consistently plans appropriate service intervention dispositions for families in need of extra support services
  • Establishes a trusting relationship with families, making referrals to community resources as needed
  • Demonstrates the ability to work cooperatively with co-workers as part of  a team
  • Demonstrates maturity in interpersonal stall relationships
  • Performs related responsibilities as required or directed 

Qualifications

Job Specifications:

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in related field from an accredited college or university is required
  • Must complete Healthy Families Training Component

Licensure, Registration, Certification:

  • Valid Tennessee Driver's License required

Experience:

  • Two(2) years of experience preferred

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to demonstrate maturity and experience in successfully raising/working with infants and young children and their parents
  • Ability to speak, read, and write English
  • Ability to demonstrate knowledge of local resources

Interpersonal Requirements:

  • Good communication skills required for frequent contact with families, other hospital personnel, and community agencies
  • Ability to relate effectively with clients and their families
  • Ability to utilize the proper channels of communication
  • Contributes to a positive work environment and the overall team effort of the department

  • Acts as a role model for clients and their families, other hospital personnel, and community agencies
  • Demonstrates leadership and the ability to teach
  • Is compassionate and sensitive to the needs of clients and their families

Physical Demands:

  • Maintains good physical and emotional well-being
  • Ability to perform moderate lifting of supplies
  • Prolonged periods of standing walking on a continuous basis

Environmental Conditions:

  • May be exposed to communicable diseases
  • May need to visit clients in high-risk areas where safety is questionable
