Duties

Overview

Under the general supervision of the Director, Clinical Manager, and Charge Nurse. Responsible for providing hygienic care and assigned procedures for assigned patients based on age specific needs. 

Essential Job Functions:

  • Answers call lights by carrying wireless phones or by console
  • Obtains and records patient vital signs per unit specification
  • Assists with new admissions by taking vital signs, obtains weights, and puts gown on patient, places telemetry patches, leads and telemetry box on patients
  • Obtains daily weights on assigned patients
  • Performs baths, linen changes, shampoos, shaves, mouth care
  • Performs bedside blood glucose testing and maintains annual competence
  • Performs veno-puncture for the purpose of lab collections and maintains competence
  • Performs 12-lead EKGs and maintains competence
  • Responsible for repositioning patients every two hours, whether it is turns or encouraging patients to turn themselves
  • Ambulates patients in the hall as needed
  • Assists patients with meals by getting patients up to chair if appropriate, offers hygiene, and prepares area for eating
  • Passes food trays and feeds patients who cannot feed themselves
  • Collects and accurately records oral intake and output
  • Assembles patient's charts, records patient information on unit records and routes patient charges
  • Enters any written orders into the electronic medical record, completes related forms, schedules procedures via computer and/or manual process, adds forms related to procedures to chart and notifies licensed personnel
  • Answers telephone and appropriate pages and relays information to appropriate team member and notifies physician of consults and schedules appointments for office visits
  • Performs responsibilities as related to the safe disposal of hazardous pharmaceutical waste
  • Sets up rooms for new admissions by providing pitcher, ice, bath pan, cups and straws
  • Keeps rooms tidy and free of clutter, cleans isolation rooms at end of shift
  • Removes dirty equipment from discharged rooms
  • Ensures patients have ice, rooms have gloves and needle boxes are changed
  • Assists with transport of patients
  • Helps keep department tidy by putting up stock, and clean rooms such as break room, microwave, refrigerator, med room, dirty room, linen room and equipment room
  • Assists with incentive spirometers
  • Responsible for documenting: baths, turns, oral intake and output obtained from Foley catheter, urinal or collection vessel, shaves, mouth care, peri and or Foley care, vital signs, linen changes, shampoos, weights, percentage of meals consumed on all of assigned patients, ambulation, incentive spirometer usage, bowel movements, and number of times patients were up in a chair
  • Responds to patient emergencies (CPR) in order be available to collect specimens as needed
  • Maintains a positive, helpful, attitude
  • Uses AIDET at all times
  • Communicates pertinent information to nurse or charge nurse
  • Ensures assigned patients are clean and dry at all times
  • Recognizes the value of continued occupational growth and development 

Qualifications

Job Specifications

Education:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required

Licensure, Registration, Certification:

  • BLS certification must be obtained within the orientation period, and certification must be kept current while in this position

Experience:

  • Preferred, but may be trained by qualified personnel on the unit

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Basic computer skills preferred
  • Ability to read, write legibly, perform basic mathematical calculations as normally acquired through high school training
  • Able to use paging systems, copy machines, tube system, computer, mobile scanning devices, printer, telephone, calculator and fax machines
  • Knowledge of medical terminology and abbreviations preferred
  • Visual perception and manual dexterity to perform collection procedures
  • Must be able to handle multiple tasks in a fast paced environment without being easily distracted
  • Must be able to communicate with many different levels of hospital personnel, often handling communications about many different situations at once
  • Knowledge of hospital and departmental policies and procedures, knowledge of appropriate specimen collection procedures as normally acquired on the job training

Interpersonal Requirements:

  • Communication skills to perform nursing care on a continuous basis and provide comfort and support to the patient and their family as well as interpersonal skills to secure and perform specimen collections and EKGs
  • Ability to exchange and provide patient care information to licensed personnel
  • Uses proper channels of communication
  • Contributes to a positive work environment and overall team effort of the department

Physical Demands

  • Ability to perform frequent moderate to heavy lifting and transporting of patients and equipment
  • Prolonged periods of standing and walking on a continuous basis
  • Ability to sit and stand for prolonged periods of time on a frequent basis
  • Frequent bending, stooping, squatting and reaching
  • Should be mobile and able to move about in the department and throughout the hospital

Environmental Conditions:

  • May be exposed to communicable diseases and bio-hazardous materials
  • Occasional exposure to unpleasant odors in patient rooms
  • Continuous exposure to blood, patient specimens and needles
