Duties
Job Summary/Scope of Responsibility:
Responsible of answering telephones and radio calls, keeping appropriate records and logs and dispatching ambulances and other vehicles to correct locations. Under the general supervision of the Director and the direct supervision of the Communications Manager, the EMD is responsible for all telecommunications and appropriate records on assigned shift with flexible schedule. Must complete EMS Board certification requirements for Emergency Medical Dispatch within 6 months of employment. Ability to perform frequent moderate to heavy lifting and transporting of patients and equipment. Employee is subject to call back and overtime as required by the hospital.
Essential Job Functions:
Answer telephones and obtains all necessary information applicable to calls
Dispatch proper personnel, Ambulance, Rescue Squad, Police, First Responder, Fire Department, etc.
Answer and transmit messages on radio systems
Record and log all pertinent information in log book(s)
Maintains radio equipment and makes minor mechanical repairs and adjustments as required
Coordinate area ambulance traffic. Maintains current and accurate inventory of EMS vehicles and personnel within geographical area of responsibility
Performs duties as assigned in daily operation of quarters involving patients, vehicles, department, and equipment following policies, procedures, and operating instructions
Reports activities to the Shift Manager including unusual occurrences and complaints from patients, families, physicians, or employees
Attends all required departmental meetings
Adheres to all federal and state regulatory requirements
Maintains and updates listing of new street/roads, closed street/roads and relay information to proper personnel
Performs related responsibilities as required or directed.

Job Specifications:
Education:
Must complete EMS Board certification requirements for Emergency Medical Dispatch
Licensure, Registration, Certification:
Current state certification as an Emergency Medical Dispatcher or certification to be obtained within six months of employment
Current Basic Life Support card from American Heart Association or equivalent or within the first thirty days of employment
Experience:
Knowledge of local hospitals and Medical Center EMS polices and procedures, standing orders, protocols, area locale , radio communication procedures, emergency and medical agencies as normally acquired through two years experience and an orientation program.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Skill and proficiency in the principles, concepts, and techniques of the EMS profession as normally acquired through the completion of a basic EMT course
Knowledge of policies and procedures of the hospital and completion of skills check sheet for designated areas as acquired through 3 month probationary period
Basic computer skills preferred
Interpersonal Requirements:
Interspersonal skills to perform EMS treatments and procedures and provide instruction, comfort, and support in interactions with patients and their families
Communication skills needed for frequent contact with unit staff, medical staff, administration, other hospital departments, and community agencies
Uses proper chanels of communication
Contributes to a positive work environment and the overall team effort of the department
Direction/Supervision Requirements:
Ability to assign, monitor, and evaluate the performance of unit staff
Acts as charge nurse of unit when assigned
Physical Demands:
Ability to perform frequent to moderate heavy lifting and transporting of patients and equipment
Prolonged periods of standing and walking on a continuous basis
Environmental Conditions:
May be exposed to communicable diseases and bio-hazardous materials
Other Job Requirements:

Participation in the clinical ladder program recommended

If working as secondary as EMT-IV or Paramedic, must meet the additional requirements of that job description as well
