City of Jackson - Dispatcher

Duties

Job Summary:

The person employed in this capacity will perform his/her duties under the direction of the Director of Central Dispatch. A person in this assignment is responsible for receiving and dispatching emergency personnel to satisfy requests for service from City of Jackson Police and Fire Departments; plus, answering and transferring calls for service to compatible agencies in question. This person will also monitor the target camera areas and dispatch for incidents as needed.

Essential Job Functions:

Monitor telephones and radios in Central Dispatch

Answer all incoming calls, ascertain nature of call, gather all necessary information, transmitt and receive messages by radio, telephone, facsimile and/or computer

Receive police and fire alarms by telephone and radio

Dispatch emergency responses; broadcast nature of incident, location and time of alarm; contact all required personnel to insure the presence of reserve units by contacting personnel designated for call-back; relay information as required

Maintain data bases to support Central Dispatch's responsibilities using various systems such as Computer Aided Dispatching (CAD), log sheets, files, radio and telephone communications; keep track of the location of field personnel and equipment; maintain ongoing contact with the responding personnel and keep the informed of all pertinent information; keep track of response information such as fire hydrants out of service, streets closed, etc.

Operate paging system, emergency sirens, rapid entry system and recording/instant recall equipment

Maintain depatch center work area and equipment in clean and working condition

Operate radio as needed and assist in radio communications

Operate office machines as required

Operate emergency generator equipment as associated with Central Dispatch

Monitor National Service Weather Service radio

Perform all other duties as may be assigned by supervisor

Tools and Equipment:

Radio console; portable radio, mapping system, telephone switchboard, computers, copier, facsimile and recorders

Qualifications

Required Education, Degrees, Certificates, And/Or License:

High School Graduate or GED with two (2) years of college with emphasis in communication preferred

National Crime Information Center (NCIC) Certification

Basic Telecommunicator Course Certification

Valid Driver's License

Experience, Training, Knowledge and Skills:

Knowledge of proper telephone etiquette

Knowledge of Federal Communications Commission (FCC) rules and regulations pertaining to police and fire departments

Knowledge of departmental rules, regulations, polices and procedures

Working knowledge of the City of Jackson and a mental picture of police and fire districts, public buildings, industrial areas, as well as, city-county boundaries

Skill in operation of all communication equipment used by Central Dispatch

Skill in the use of computer terminal, including the use of all CAD systems

Skill in the use of keyboard

Skill in the use of multi-line telehphone system, including the use of E-9-1-1 system

Ability to deal harmoniously with members of the Central Dispatch, other public safety agencies and the general public

Ability to understand and carry out written and verbal instructions

Ability to cope with stressful situations

Central Dispatch is a fast-paced working environment with telephones constantly ringing, radio transmissions blasting, and co-workers communicating with each other. The ability to multi-task is necessary to perform the essential job functions.
