The Writing Center is an open and supportive learning community where you can come to write, to think, and to collaborate on writing assignments with your peers. In our center, we focus on writing as a process rather than just a means to an end. Our mission is to help create better writers, not just better papers. We encourage you to come in at any and every stage of the writing process, from brainstorming to putting the finishing touches on your paper. No matter the stage of your writing, we will help you with the aspects of your paper with which you are most concerned.  We do our best to help you with organization and structure first, so we can focus on grammar and syntax later on in the process.

It is important to us that you maintain ownership over your written work, so our writing consultants will guide you through the writing and revision process in a way which will ensure that your own voice emerges as clearly as possible. We are here to help you with any assignment from any class, and we will also help you with personal writing projects, including scholarship applications, creative projects, etc. So, when you begin thinking about your next writing project, think about coming in to Jackson State Community College's Writing Center.

Locations

The main campus Writing Center in Jackson is in the Library Building, on the first floor, facing the Quad. At the Lexington and Savannah campuses, the Writing Center is located inside the Learning Resource Center.

Making an Appointment

Making an appointment at the JSCC Writing Center is the best way to be sure that you get the help you need with your writing projects.

To make an appointment with a writing tutor in Jackson, just call the Center at (731) 425-8848. You can also stop in the Center to make an appointment or use TutorTrac.

At the other campuses, call the Learning Resource Center to set an appointment, or stop in during tutoring hours.

When you are ready to schedule an appointment, tell the receptionist what project you'd like help with and when you'd like to come.

If you need help at the last minute or could not get an appointment, check for our walk-in hours, when appointments are first-come, first-served for students just dropping in.

In Jackson:

What We Do

At the JSCC Writing Center, out consultants help you to become a better writer. When you visit the Writing Center, you and your consultant will work on your paper together. Your consultant will make recommendations to improve your paper — and your writing in general — based on what you and the consultant discuss. You will always be responsible for the final decisions about what changes to make in your paper.

Who Can Visit the Center?

Any JSCC student can visit the Writing Center for help with any writing project.

If you are a student, you can get help with writing assignments for any class, not just writing courses, and personal writing like résumés or scholarship applications.
