Mary Jo Boehms, department chair and associate professor of business at Jackson State Community College, has received a Teaching Excellence Award for Region 3 of the Association of Collegiate Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP). The award is given to only one faculty member from a two year ACBSP member institution each year. Boehms has received regional recognition, a cash reward, and a medallion.
As a recipient, she was a nominee for the International Teaching Excellence Award at the annual conference in Chicago. Boehms has taught at Jackson State Community College since 1978. She began as an adjunct, and was hired full time in 1982.
Boehms has taught 32 different business courses for the college, but regularly teaches Introduction to Business, Principles in Management, Quality Management, and Business Statistics. Boehms became involved with the ACBSP organization in 1997, when JSCC's business department received accreditation. She now serves as Treasurer for the Region 3 division and is also on the National ACBSP Marketing Committee. Colleges and universities in the states of Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee are represented in Region 3. ACBSP selects recipients for its Teaching Excellence Awards in the spring of each year.
The Teaching Excellence Award Committee has established five criteria for the selection of recipients including; classroom teaching and learning, institutional versatility, curriculum development, professional development, and community commitment.
The organization was founded in 1988 by its members to fulfill a need for specialized accreditation by institutions of higher education with business schools and programs. It is geographically divided into eight regions. Each region has a set of officers selected from that region.
ACBSP's mission is to develop, promote, and recognize best practices that contribute to continuous improvement of business education and accredits qualified business programs.
