Jackson State and Trevecca Partner in 'Fast Track' Degree Program

May 5th, 2014

Jackson State Community College and Trevecca Nazarene University have partnered in an effort to offer a quick and convenient method for students to complete a four-year degree on the JSCC campus. From start to finish, students can complete both an AAS in business and a BA in management and human relations in fewer than 30 months.

Jackson State has offered an associate of applied science in business with a 'Fast Track,' quick completion option for several years. Students take classes only one night a week, complete their degree in 16 months, and are part of a cohort group that allows students to have a support group throughout the process. Terri Messer, dean of business and industrial technology, states, 'This option is a great one for those with jobs who cannot afford to take a break from their responsibilities to go to school.'

Trevecca offers students the opportunity to complete a Bachelor of Arts in management and human relations in 13 contiguous months. This program is open to all individuals who have completed an associate degree - whether or not their previous coursework is from JSCC. Additionally, all classes are offered on Jackson State's main campus.

Lance Sherer, Trevecca site coordinator, notes 'The partnership with Jackson State is great for students because it offers anyone wanting to enter the program a convenient way to make up prerequisite deficiencies.' He continues, 'This arrangement also allows a student to enter the program at any point with a guaranteed transfer pathway.'

The cost of the program is also touted as a great selling point. In addition to Jackson State's low in-state tuition, Trevecca is offering all students at the Jackson location a 45 percent reduction in tuition.

'This program is a great value,' says Messer. 'We are so excited to offer this opportunity to our students, but it is also great to have a partner like Trevecca that adds value to our organization and to the community.'

A joint marketing effort by the two organizations began May 1. The hope is to recruit students for this program through local industry. Anyone interested in the program is encouraged to contact JSCC or Lance Sherer. An open house event will be held Thursday, May 15 from 3 to 6 PM at JSCC's McWherter Center. This event will give prospective students an opportunity to see the facility and meet with faculty.
