Jackson State to Host The Soldier's Song April 13-14

Jackson, TennesseeMarch 26, 12Jackson State Community College will be hosting the series of seminars and musical performance entitled The Soldiers Song in commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Shiloh on April 13-14 with seminars beginning daily at 1:30 p.m. in McWherter Center and the evening musical performance beginning at 7 p.m. on Jackson States main campus in Ayers Auditorium.

The seminars will be held daily in McWherter Center from 1:30-3 p.m. with five seminars to choose from including:

  • Songwriting, led by Wood Newton;
  • Stringed Instruments (fiddle, banjo and mandolin) led by Alan OBryant and Natlie Murphy;
  • Voice and Performance for Commercial Music led by Odessa Settles;
  • Recording in the Studio led by Jim Sales;
  • and The Uncivil War led by Professor Daniel L. Johnson.

The evening musical performance uses songs from the Civil War Era along with songs that have been written or co-written by Daniel Johnson and Wood Newton. Instruments that were used during the Civil War Era will be used during the performance.

According to www.thesoldierssong.com, the show is a celebration of the music of the American Civil War and is a historically-accurate dramatic musical presentation thatwas written as a Readers Theatre work and features both narration and character interpretationstold through the voices of Pvt. Sam R. Watkins of the Confederate Army and Sgt. James Landon of the Union Army along with several other famous figures of the Civil War Era.

The cast includes some of Nashvilles most musically gifted song writers and musicians including two Grammy Award winning artists, several Country and Gospel Music artists with No. 1 songs and a host of others with remarkable musical skill.

Tickets for the entire days events including seminars and the musical performance are $10 per person and can be purchased at the door. Students K-12 will receive free admission. College students from all schools with current college ID will be provided free admission as well.
