Feb 27th, 2012

Joel Newman has been named Senior Small Business Specialist for the Tennessee Small Business Development Center (TSBDC) for the Southwest Tennessee Region. He joined the TSBDC at Jackson State in 2009.

His job focuses on helping start-up businesses, formulating business plans and helping existing businesses with everyday cash flow and marketing problems. 'The real payment for me is seeing clients that I work with grow their business and be successful,' he said. 'However, in this down economy, the challenge has been to secure loans for clients because of the strict banking regulations. The challenge for me is to keep moving forward and keeping people thinking positive.'

A certified business counselor, Newman was previously the Chairman of the SCORE (Service Corp of Retired Executives). He has been a volunteer with the Jackson Area Chamber of Commerce since his retirement from the Kellwood Co. in 1999 where he was Vice President of Sourcing and Off-Shore Manufacturing for the Outerwear Division. Newman is also involved in several non-profit organizations.
