Jackson State Community College (JSCC) Criminal Justice students attended a one-day De-escalation Techniques and Emergency Response (DETER) training at the Lawrence D. The training also included active listening skills, safety and usage of firearms, and behavioral change stairway (active listening, empathy, rapport, influence=behavioral change). After classroom training, they used their new skills in multiple virtual scenarios, which included, but not limited to, hostage negotiation, suicidal ideations, and deadly force. At the end of the training, students were provided with a completion certificate from the University of Tennessee at Martin Law Enforcement Innovation Center Institute for Public Safety.
