Norman Jordan to Portray Carter G. Woodson in Black History Month Program

Feb 9th, 2007

Norman Jordan, local poet and playwright, will portray Carter G. Woodson the father of African-American history at 9:30 a.m. on Feb. 22 in the gymnasium at Jackson State Community College. The event is free and open to the public. More than 500 Jackson area intermediate/middle school students will be in attendance at the program.

Woodson spent his young adult years in West Virginia as a railroad worker, coal miner, teacher, principal and professor, but his vision didn't stop there. He went on to become the first son of former slaves to earn a doctoral degree from Harvard University.

He devoted his life to bringing the achievements of his race to the world's attention. The annual Black History Month Celebration in February was created by Woodson as well as the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History which has been called the start of the black history movement. In 1984, the Postal Service issued a stamp in his honor.

The program is sponsored by the Black Student Association at Jackson State. For more information about the program, contact JSCC'??s Office of Student Services at 425-2634.
